Remembering Prof M. Santappa
Prof. Santappa honored as one of the 75 Founders of Modern Science in India.

INTRODUCTION

We are delighted to inform you that Professors, Scientists, Scholars, Industrialists, friends and well-wishers of Prof. M. Santappa have come together to celebrate the 100th Birth Anniversary of Prof. M. Santappa [Born: Oct 2, 1923].

A core committee under the Presidentship of Padma Bhushan Dr. T. Ramasami, Ex Secretary, Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India; Padma Shri Dr. S. Sivaram, Ex Director, NCL/CSIR (National Chemical Laboratory/Council of Scientific and Industrial research), Mumbai and Indian National Science Academy (INSA) Emeritus Scientist, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Prof. P. Maruthamuthu, Ex Vice Chancellor, Madurai-Kamaraj University, Madurai and Dr. E. Murugan, Dean – Research and Head of Department (HOD) of Physical Chemistry Department, University of Madras and few others met in Chennai on Jan 30, 2023 and decided to celebrate the 100th Birth Anniversary of Prof. M. Santappa on 3rd October 2023 as a tribute for his yeoman service rendered in the field of Polymer Science, Physical Chemistry, Leather Technology and in general for promotion of Chemical Science in our country and abroad [See Career Bio Tab].

The Core Committee arrived at a consensus that Department of Physical Chemistry, University of Madras is the most appropriate place for initiating the Centenary Commemorating program [See Proposed Program Tab] as Prof. M. Santappa was the first Professor and Head of the Department of Physical Chemistry when the Department was established at the University of Madras in 1952. Other Institutions/Organizations including The Society of Polymer Science (SPSI), Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), Sri Venkateswara (SV) University, and many more have derived the immense benefits from Prof. M. Santappa’s contribution. It was decided that Department of Physical Chemistry, University of Madras, the SPSI and CLRI will work together to make this a successful commemorative event. The Core Committee has set up a few other committees [See Committees Tab] to work together to make this event a grand success.

Prof. S. Sivaram has accepted to be Chairman and Dr. E. Murugan has accepted to be Organizing Secretary of Prof. M. Santappa Birth Centenary Commemorative Committee. [See Contacts Tab]
